Karbala runs on a single axis: Bayn al-Haramayn, the few hundred metres of polished marble between the golden-domed shrine of Imam Husayn and the shrine of his brother Abbas. Come at dusk, when the stone has cooled and the floodlights come on, and you will walk among families from Lagos, Lucknow and Qom, attendants spraying rosewater, volunteers pressing glasses of cardamom tea into your hands. Inside, mirror-mosaic ceilings scatter the light into thousands of pieces, and the recitation around the tomb never quite stops. Non-Muslim visitors are welcomed if dressed respectfully — women wear a full abaya (shops by the gates sell them for a few dollars), men long trousers and sleeves. Beyond the shrines there is a real city: date orchards fed by the Husayniyya canal, cauldrons of qeema stew shared in the streets during Muharram, and, an hour southwest across open desert, the eighth-century Abbasid fortress of Al-Ukhaidir — where you will often be the only visitors at all.

FROM OUR TRIP JOURNAL
On our October trip we reached Bayn al-Haramayn just after evening prayer, eleven of us slightly overwhelmed by the crowd. An elderly shrine attendant noticed Ingrid from Munich wrestling with her borrowed abaya, laughed, pinned it properly with her own clip, and then refused to let us leave without tea. We stayed on that marble for two hours and nobody wanted to be the first to say goodnight.

WHAT WE SHOW YOU

Imam Husayn Shrine

religious

The golden dome at the heart of Shia devotion. Inside, mirror-mosaic halls and constant, quiet recitation surround the tomb of the Prophet's grandson.

Al-Abbas Shrine

religious

Husayn's standard-bearer rests a short walk north. Iraqis swear their most serious oaths by Abbas; watch pilgrims press cloth to the silver grille.

Bayn al-Haramayn

culture

The marble esplanade linking the two shrines. At dusk it becomes Karbala's living room: tea stalls, volunteers pushing wheelchairs, children asleep on carpets.

Al-Ukhaidir Fortress

heritage

An eighth-century Abbasid palace-fortress standing nearly intact in open desert, 50 kilometres southwest. Climb its galleries and you will likely have them to yourselves.

Arbaeen Hospitality

culture

Each Arbaeen, some twenty million walkers converge on Karbala, fed and sheltered free by roadside mawakib — ordinary families cooking for strangers around the clock.

Qeema in the Streets

food

Karbala's votive dish: minced meat and split peas simmered for hours in courtyard cauldrons, ladled over rice and handed out free during Muharram.
