For fifty-six years in the ninth century, this bend of the Tigris ruled an empire stretching from Tunisia to Central Asia. Caliph al-Mu'tasim moved his court here in 836 and named it Surra Man Ra'a — "he who sees it, rejoices." What survives is startling in scale: the Malwiya, a 52-metre minaret coiling counter-clockwise into the sky like a shell stood on end, ringed by the footprint of what was once the largest mosque on earth. Samarra works best as a day trip from Baghdad — go in the morning, when the Abbasid brick glows amber and you may have the ramparts to yourselves. In the modern town, the gold dome of the Al-Askari Shrine flashes above pilgrim crowds; women borrow abayas at the checkpoint, cameras stay outside (phones are fine). Expect more security stops than elsewhere in Iraq — our team handles the paperwork — and expect the first sight of the Malwiya from the highway to end all conversation in the van.

One windy March morning, halfway up the Malwiya, our whole group of nine went quiet at once — nothing but the ramp, the wind, and the Tigris bending green through the dust below. At the bottom, a Samarran grandfather who had watched us come down passed his flask of sweet tea along the line and insisted on photographing each of us pointing at the top.

Al-Askari Shrine

Resting place of the tenth and eleventh Imams beneath a rebuilt gold dome. Abayas are available at the gate; cameras stay outside, phones are fine.

Dar al-Khilafa Palace and Bab al-Amma

The caliph's audience halls, entered through three vast brick arches where petitioners once waited. Come early for amber light and, usually, nobody else at all.

Abu Dulaf Mosque

The Malwiya's quieter sibling on the steppe north of town: a second spiral minaret with almost no visitors, and often the better chance of a climb.

Qasr al-Ashiq

The "Lover's Palace," a restored Abbasid fortress on the Tigris's west bank. Save it for late afternoon, when the brickwork turns the colour of honey.

Pilgrim lanes by the shrine

Stalls outside the shrine checkpoint sell prayer beads, chadors, cardamom tea and hot samoon bread. Sit a while and watch pilgrims arrive from Iran, Pakistan, Lebanon.
