Najaf

The city that reads, prays, and remembers

Southern Iraq · BEST SEASON: October - April

NAJAF · MAR 2026 · 15 TRAVELERS

Najaf runs on two currents: pilgrims and scholars. Arrive in late afternoon, walk the covered Grand Souq past sellers of prayer beads, silver Najafi rings and cardamom tea, and the alley opens suddenly onto the Imam Ali Shrine — a gold dome so bright at sunset that conversations around you actually drop. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome in the courtyards; women borrow an abaya at the gate, and evening is the calmest, most beautiful hour to go. On the city's edge, Wadi al-Salam stretches to the horizon: six square kilometres of tombs and turquoise domes, more than six million burials over 1,400 years, and funerals still arriving daily. Twenty minutes away in Kufa stands one of the world's earliest mosques, where Ali was struck down at dawn prayer in 661. Back in the old city, browse the booksellers of Khornak Street — locals call it Najaf's Mutanabbi — then finish with qeema, the slow-cooked chickpea-and-meat stew this city ladles out on holy days.

FROM OUR TRIP JOURNAL
Last November our group of ten reached the shrine courtyard just as the sunset call to prayer began, and for a full minute nobody reached for a camera. Later in the Grand Souq, a ring-seller noticed us hesitating over sizes, closed his till, sat us down and poured three rounds of tea before any silver changed hands. Marta from Lisbon still wears hers.

WHAT WE SHOW YOU

Imam Ali Shrine

religious

The gold dome above Imam Ali's tomb draws millions of pilgrims a year. Visitors of all faiths may enter the courtyards; evenings are the quietest, coolest hours.

Wadi al-Salam Cemetery

heritage

Six square kilometres of tombs and turquoise domes, 1,400 years of continuous burial — the world's largest cemetery, now on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list.

The Grand Souq

culture

The covered market running straight to the shrine gate: prayer beads, Najafi silver rings, cardamom tea, and the city's best people-watching between afternoon and evening prayers.

Great Mosque of Kufa

heritage

Twenty minutes north stands one of Islam's earliest mosques, founded in the seventh century — the place where Imam Ali was fatally struck at dawn prayer.

Khornak Street Booksellers

culture

When the old Huwaish book market closed for shrine expansion, its booksellers moved here. Locals already call this lane of stacked volumes Najaf's Mutanabbi.

Qeema Najafiya

food

Minced meat and chickpeas slow-cooked to a dark, cinnamon-scented stew and ladled over rice — made in vast pots and shared free during religious commemorations.
